Tips For Beginner Runners

Running well takes more than just running often — technique, commitment and a bit of strategy all matter.

Check your route. Before you head out, think about your route, the weather and what gear you'll need. When you're running on an unfamiliar path, it's worth slowing down slightly, and exploring new routes in daylight first gives you options if you need to change plan.

Be seen. Wear bright or white clothing with reflective elements, especially early morning, dusk or at night — a reflective vest makes you visible to drivers and other road users.

Be consistent. Consistency is what actually builds endurance and aerobic capacity — aim for at least three runs a week, then build duration and frequency gradually to avoid injury.

Add distance slowly. Once regular running feels normal, add 5-10 minutes or 1-2km a week — a measured approach that avoids injury while building real distance over a few months.

Fuel properly. Complex carbohydrates should be around 60% of your intake, since they release energy gradually — nuts, seeds, sweet potatoes, whole grains, lean protein and iron-rich foods, with plenty of variety in your fruit and veg.

Recover. Take at least one rest day a week for your muscles to repair; light yoga or walking keeps you moving without undoing the rest.
