Our Protective Face Mask

During our 2019 trip to Malawi, we were struck by the country's beauty and the generosity of local people despite their limited resources. When the UN warned that COVID-19 could have a "disastrously huge" impact on poverty-stricken communities there, we felt we had to act.

We partnered with Farida, a local contact from our visit, and her friend Edda, who began manufacturing protective face masks from African cotton fabric. For every mask sold, we donate an additional one to local charities.

The masks are 100% cotton on the outside with a felt lining and elastic ear loops — breathable and comfortable, though explicitly not medical-grade and not a guarantee against COVID-19 transmission. Wash after every use.

It's a small way to support Malawian communities economically while helping people stay protected as lockdowns eased around the world.
