How To Stick To Your Winter Running Routine
I struggle with cold weather, but seasonal weather shouldn't derail your fitness goals — here's what helps me keep running through winter.
Time your runs for midday hours when temperatures are warmest and there's natural daylight. Don't force yourself into an uncomfortable schedule; choose a time that feels manageable.
Safety matters in the dark months: wear reflective or fluorescent clothing, use a head torch, and stick to well-lit routes. Run with companions or a group where you can, and avoid headphones on solo runs so you stay aware of your surroundings.
Layer properly — gloves (mittens if you feel the cold badly), a headband, and clothing you can adjust as your body warms up (it usually takes about ten minutes). Change into dry clothes as soon as you finish.
Finally, know your motivation: register for an upcoming race, join a parkrun, or set an achievable short-term goal to keep yourself accountable through winter.
